Megavideo .com, mediafire blocked by Department of Telecom in India

by Deepak on July 20, 2011

Hello Friends,

I was just watching some videos online and to my surprise megavideo site does not opened and shown a blank page, so I just refreshed the page but then I got this red bold text on a background of exclamation mark

“this site has been blocked as per instructions from Department of Telecom (DOT)”

And I was like WTF? I have a full year premium account left on that site and megavideo is the no. 1 video site online. Following is the screenshot of the megavideo site taken just few minutes back.

Megavideo blocked in India, but why?

I mean seriously, these kinds of stupid actions make me laugh. What do the government or department of telecom think, their action will achieve. I mean literally

1. Youtube – You can watch almost anything online, how many music videos and albums are available on youtube, are you going to be blocking youtube also!

2. Piracy will not and can not be stopped by these stupid actions, you will stop one site, 100 such sites will start.

3. Just search for a movie name + songs or mp3 and you get any album or mp3 you want online. Go and block all of them.

4. There are literally thousands of watch movies online sites available, bollywood, hollywood, tollywood etc you can not block or stop all of them.

Blocking one site is just plain stupid in my opinion.

Internet is supposed to be FREE, let it be FREE.

I can not see any reason to block Megavideo because many such other sites are still easily accessible,

How to access Megavideo and other file sharing services in India now

how to open sites blocked by dot

The only simple answer would be just use your favorite proxy site to access megavideo and in the mean time I will look for some more elegant solution.

Update- Mr. Sreekanth have suggested a better solution to this problem

http://www.ultrareach.com/

Download the program from the above url, they claim it is the best anti-censorship software available up to date.

To add to my disappointment they have also blocked mediafire.com , one of the best file sharing service ever. These guys have literally gone mad.

What do you think about megavideo and mediafire
being banned in India
, do share your views and comments.

Update: OMG, they have literally ruined the internet for us, I checked out the following sites, lets make a list of sites banned by department of Telecom Today.

File sharing and Video sharing sites Banned in India by DOT list

  • 1. Megaupload.com
  • 2. Mediafire.com
  • 3. Megavideo.com
  • 4. VideoBB.com
  • 5. Novamov.com
  • 6. Movshare.net
  • 7. Rapidshare.com
  • 8. Putlocker.com
  • 9. Hotfile.com
  • 10. Fileserve.com (sometimes opening, sometimes DOT page shows)
  • 11. Filesonic.com
  • 12. Filesonic.in
  • 13. Depositfiles.com
  • 14. Wupload.com
  • 15.  Uploaded.to
  • 16. UploadStation.com
  • 17.  Sendspace.com
  • 18.  Ziddu.com
  • Please comment if you find any more sites!

They have not only ruined this for us viewers, but there are literally thousands of Indians who earns a living and part time income from these websites. These file sharing websites are a good source of income for many people, it is pretty bad move by Indian Government’s Department of Telecom (DOT) and a violation of Free Speech in My opinion, Today is very SAD day for me :(

This step is just a fool step..
By the way, instead of using proxy, I will advise you to change dns of your internet connection..
Just double click on your internet connection icon in the system tray, view its tcp/ip properties, then chose dns servers manually..
Fill
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
THats it!

Satya July 20, 2011 at 7:50 pm

The retards at the various ISP’s and DOT havent heard of proxy servers?? LOL… and what about torrent sites?? good luck trying to ban them. Countries like china have failed miserably at such misadventures and the indian authorities rather than getting the copyright infringing material removed from mediafire, just blocks the entire site..WTF?? so LAME!!!

And FYI mediafire is very active in removing copyright infringing material.. Just send them a DMCA notice and they comply within 24 hours. Ive had pirated copies of some of my software that was being shared removed from mediafire in under 24 hours…

Grow up DOT!

Deepak July 20, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Tried changing the DNS mate,
It did not worked for me, if this worked for other people please reply and let us know.

Anon July 20, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Real idiots. REAL REAL idiots. To imagine that Megavideo or Mediafire is their bigger problem is a clear indication of their intellect.

Anupama July 20, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Yes they have and they seem to have done it RIGHT NOW. The bloody assholes!

I’m going to use RTI to get them to explain their actions and so should you. Heres how to do it:
http://censorship.wikia.com/wiki/Blogs_and_RTI_Act_of_India

And also, time to raise a storm on Twitter.

Deepak July 20, 2011 at 8:24 pm

I think this is in direct violation of Freedom of Speech and Right to Information, Lets speak out friends, until and unless they block this site too !

Do you really think our government is smart enough to stop us ? Lets break the rule \m/

by the way thanx for the ultrareach ;)

AOGOI July 20, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Hello,
I did some research on ultrareach’s ultrasurf and i would like to inform you people, it can leak your persona data, so its not safe to use on your main computer, rather learn about VMware or other virtual os running softwares and use ultrasurf there.
I am on VMware currently ;)

utkarsh July 20, 2011 at 10:52 pm

i dont what the fucking retards want…
i cant understand how dumb a person can be..thinking they can reduce piracy by such an idiotic action…there are millions of ways of downloading any movie songs app..practically anything…
any ways bro…they have still left fileserve ifile.it and 4shared out….
i think they have borrowed the list from arabian countries coz the same sites are banned there and the same sites like ifile.it/4shared are the only sharing sites which are opening there too…
fucking retards cant even make a website list themselves….

S July 20, 2011 at 11:14 pm

Hi,

I downloaded the Usurf, but whenever I try to open a video from Megavideo it goes blank.. and stops loading after a while!

I am so tired of our Govt.. why don’t they concentrate on something more important?

Please help me how to start megavideo again.. thanks!

PlaytheGAME July 20, 2011 at 11:28 pm

That is a stupid step , as u rightly said every day a new hosting site is emerging , how long they will keep on banning them ?

AOGOI July 20, 2011 at 11:53 pm

Indian gov. sounds funny sometimes.
you can get any pirated movie, mp3 cd/dvd being sold on road for 30-40 rs. you can get any software for around 50 rs at computer shop.
I think piracy people forced government to block these sites, so they can earn some…. he he ……..

shraddha ramnakuttam muthrukeshapalli July 21, 2011 at 4:43 am

Something needs to be done with these bastards. After censoring television for ages, now they have started with the internet.
I say we start a blog ourselves and get back at them

Jaxx89 July 21, 2011 at 5:38 am

The blocked websites r working fine on BSNL broadband services , i have a reliance broadband too on which all the websites mentioned stopped working , what i think the various internet service providers have blocked these websites so that we guys cannot download huge data, lets all start complaining to there Customer care , i personally donot think that these sites r not blocked by DOT and they r just trying to stop us from downloading big files
Kindly lets start updating which ISP we have

sreekanth July 21, 2011 at 11:31 am

s BSNL didnt blocked the service only reliance had blocked.

amit kama July 21, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Dear friends,
movie makers and other must have paid heavy money to DOT head. That is why they are breaching the independence of the users.

amit kama July 21, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Hathway has also blocked some of the sites

amit kama July 21, 2011 at 12:28 pm

The best way for this will be lodge RTI complain and ask DOT whether this is fact and if yes then why?

FUCK OFF DOT July 21, 2011 at 12:44 pm

GO AND FUCK YOURSELF DEPARTMENT OF TELECOM!!!! :@ :@ :@

John Galt July 21, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Stupid work

official site of DOT():

cx July 22, 2011 at 2:00 am

Common sense is uncommon, and this just proves it.

Just because *some* people use these sites for sharing copyrighted stuff DOES NOT MEAN that everybody does.

What next? Will these block sites like sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/) too, citing that these sites offer access to proxy servers and other tools? Or block access to Google and other search engines, as they provide links to pirated content in their results? (As you can see, this act of censoring web-sites is one slippery slope, and has to be stopped at the earliest.)

And as far as piracy is concerned, this is only going to encourage the pirates to find newer ways of sharing files.

Also, http://broadbandforum.in/broadband-in-india/70941-site-has-been-blocked-per/ and http://www.medianama.com/2011/07/223-files-sharing-sites-blocked-in-india-because-reliance-big-pictures-got-a-court-order/ seem to indicate that this was done to prevent piracy of some stupid film (A look at various online forums found in Google and the aforementioned links suggests that plans of boycotting the movie are being made, and I personally hope that the movie becomes one of the biggest box-office duds of the year). If that is the case, then I feel the producers should have gone about ensuring that prints of the film did not fall in the hands of the pirates in the first place, rather than blocking file sharing web sites.

If such type of brainless censoring continues, then we will have no other option but to turn to Freenet (http://freenetproject.org/) or similar Darknets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darknet_(file_sharing)) (and maybe overthrow this group pathetic liars and powermongers which is our government) to protect our freedom of expression, speech and other rights.

Adirai Maji July 28, 2011 at 12:42 am
